Sunfire to supply 30-MW electrolyser to Uniper

Sunfire pressurized alkaline electrolyser.

August 4 (Renewables Now) - Germany energy company Uniper SE (ETR:UN01) has ordered a 30-MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser from the Dresden-based producer Sunfire GmbH, the firms said today.

Due to be delivered in 2024, the electrolyser will be installed at the energy park in Bad Lauchstaedt in the central German region of Saxony-Anhalt, where it will produce green hydrogen using electricity from a nearby wind farm.

"The Bad Lauchstaedt energy park covers the entire value chain including the production, transport, storage, distribution and use of green hydrogen," Uniper hydrogen head Axel Wietfeld explained, adding that green hydrogen can help ensure energy supply not dependent on Russian gas.

The project also includes temporarily storing the hydrogen produced in a specially equipped salt cavern and feeding it into the local chemical industries’ hydrogen network via a repurposed gas pipeline. The hydrogen could also be used for urban mobility in the future.

Sunfire recently received substantial backing from the federal government and the EU to scale its technologies as part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI).
