April 18 (Renewables Now) - Floating wind developer Simply Blue Group has applied for an offshore location license (OLL) for one of the 11 areas open for bidding in a Polish government tender for offshore wind development.

The Cork, Ireland-based company said on Thursday it is seeking a lease for an area known as 60.E.4 in the Polish Baltic Sea -- the deepest one in the country’s maritime spatial plan.

“[..] Simply Blue Group is committed to working with the local stakeholders and authorities to establish the framework for floating offshore wind and to maximise the benefits for local communities,” the developer said. It noted its application mirrors “the enormous potential and demand” for floating offshore wind in the Baltic Region.

The Irish firm is not the only one vying for the 60.E.4 site. Last week, SSE Renewables announced it has applied for an OLL for the same area. If awarded the license, it will partner with Spain's Acciona Energia (BME:ANE) on the project development.

The 11 areas open for bidding are expected to unlock more than 10 GW of capacity. The auction aims to back Poland in its efforts to install 5.9 GW of offshore wind turbines by 2030 and 11 GW by 2040.
