May 13 (Renewables Now) - Polish oil refiner PKN Orlen (WSE:PKN) has signed a deal to lease a site on the port of Leba where it plans to build a base for the maintenance of the up to 1.2-GW Baltic Power offshore wind farm.

The company said on Thursday it has secured a 1.1-hectare area for the construction of a service base, which will be used to permanently operate at least two crew transfer vessels (CTVs). It will accommodate spare part warehouses, workshops and office space for about 50 employees who will conduct regular inspections of the turbines.

The project in Leba is scheduled to be carried out in the period 2023-2025, at an estimated cost of between PLN 20 million (USD 4.5m/EUR 4.3m) and PLN 30 million. The front-end loading documentation is being developed by Antea Polska.

“The port in Leba will best meet all our objectives and needs as part of the Baltic Power project. We also see its potential in terms of PKN Orlen’s strategy to pursue further offshore wind power developments in the coming years,” said Anna Lukaszewska - Trzeciakowska, president of the Baltic Power Management Board.

The 70-turbine Baltic Power wind farm will be built about 23 km north of the Baltic coastline, near Leba and Choczewo, and is expected to be completed in 2026. It is a joint project between PKN Orlen and Canada’s Northland Power In (TSE:NPI).
