Guatemala gives nod for 23-MW HPP construction

(SeeNews) - Jul 14, 2014 - Guatemala's energy and mines ministry has authorised the construction of a 23-MW hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in San Felipe municipality, Retalhuleu department, according to a resolution in the official gazette on Friday.

The plant, dubbed El Recreo II, will have two 11.5-MW units using water from Samala river, with an adjacent transmission system of 69 kV to the El Recreo-Los Brillantes line.

At the end of 2013, Guatemalan power regulator CNEE approved power transmission studies for El Recreo II, presented by Genepal SA, owner of the project.

The permit issued by the ministry is valid for 50 years.
