Gascade, Fluxys team up to develop hydrogen infrastructure in Germany

July 8 (Renewables Now) - German gas pipeline operator Gascade and Belgium-based energy infrastructure group Fluxys will partner on the development of pipeline infrastructure for hydrogen in Germany to support the country's decarbonisation efforts.

The two companies said in a joint statement on Thursday they will work together on the doing hydrogen and AquaDuctus projects that are meant to connect hydrogen demand centres with onshore and offshore hydrogen production in Germany.

Together, they will build a 50-kilometre (31.07 mi) hydrogen pipeline as part of the doing hydrogen project, starting from the area of Rostock on the Baltic Sea and going southwards.

The project was initiated by Gascade and Ontras Gastransport GmbH and involves a 575-km long network in eastern Germany that will connect production and consumption points in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin. The network should enter operation in 2026. The project includes also connections with Poland, the Czech Republic and Denmark.

The second project in the scope of Fluxys and Gascade's partnership is for the development of a main hydrogen corridor that will transport up to one million tonnes of hydrogen produced from wind farms in the North Sea to the German onshore grid by 2035. The large-scale pipeline will be built by Gascade, Gasunie, RWE AG (ETR:RWE), Equinor (NYSE:EQNR) and Shell Plc (LON:SHEL)

The two projects have been selected by Germany's Ministry for Economics and Climate Action as Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI).
