July 22 (Renewables Now) - The Chilean region of Biobio currently has USD 1 billion (EUR 891.2m) worth of wind and hydropower projects under construction or in development, Chile’s energy minister Juan Carlos Jobet said last week.

Construction already started on two wind farms totalling 41.4 MW on a USD-53-million investment. This year, three more wind projects will move to the construction stage to bring an additional 239 MW of capacity for USD 311 million. Next year will see the construction of another four wind and hydropower plants for USD 636 million.

Chile still has 30,000 families living without electricity. Biobio is the home to 3,000 of them, minister Jobet said during his visit to the region where he inaugurated a rural electrification project in the commune of Arauco.
