Brazil's Petrobras, Raizen to evaluate biomethane cooperation

Sugarcane harvesting in Brazil

June 16 (Renewables Now) - Brazilian state-controlled company Petroleo Brasileiro SA (BVMF:PETR4), or Petrobras, announced that it is evaluating a potential biomethane partnership with local sugar and ethanol producer Raizen SA (BVMF:RAIZ4).

The companies will look into the production, purchase and sale of biomethane, while also studying logistics solutions for the use of the biofuel in Petrobras' refining operations.

For its part, Raizen sees the production of biomethane as a way to expand its renewable solutions portfolio, ensuring economy and sustainability for its customers.

"This project is an opportunity to connect the production of renewable biomethane with the production of high-quality fuels and refinery products that will thus be obtained with lower carbon emissions. The initiative reinforces our commitment to seek economic and sustainable opportunities that combine value generation and low carbon, offering better quality and environmentally efficient products," Petrobras’ CEO Jose Mauro Coelho noted.
