June 3 (Renewables Now) - BHE Canada, a unit of billionaire Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Energy, on Tuesday announced the commissioning of its 130-MW Rattlesnake Ridge wind farm in the province of Alberta.

The 26-turbine plant, powered by Siemens Gamesa hardware, is located near Medicine Hat in southeastern Alberta’s Forty Mile County. It is expected to generate power to cover the consumption of around 78,000 homes, according to BHE's estimates.

Rattlesnake Ridge is BHE’s first wind farm coming online in Canada. The CAD-200-million (USD 158m/EUR 147.5m) project was developed and installed without using government subsidies and tax incentives, with debt and equity being provided by the developer.

Three power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the wind farm’s output were signed in March with Royal Bank of Canada (TSE:RY-G), green energy retailer Bullfrog Power Inc and e-commerce company Shopify Inc (TSE:SHOP). Another PPA is also in place with an unnamed corporate client, BHE said. The four contracts enable each company to get environmental attributes to meet its environmental goals and mitigate existing carbon production.

UK-based Renewable Energy Systems (RES) was in charge of Rattlesnake Ridge’s construction.
