INTERVIEW - Energy security, capital markets in EBRD's focus in SEE
May 19, 2022 8:42 CESTDecember 19 (Renewables Now) - The European Patent Office (EPO) has granted new patents to Finnish wave energy developer AW-Energy Oy for its WaveRoller device, the company informed on Tuesday.
AW-Energy has secured patent protection for the wave energy converter in 38 countries across Europe. The use of the device in wave energy applications is protected until 2034.
The patents, EP3175111 (B1) and EP3175110 (B1), cover the energy system and power transfer application of the WaveRoller device, including several operating improvements, AW-Energy said.
WaveRoller consists of a submerged movable steel panel hinged to a concrete foundation and a power take-off (PTO) unit. The device can be installed on the ocean floor near shore.
The technology has been deployed off the coast of Peniche in Portugal.
Thanks to its innovation, AW-Energy has so far accumulated 57 patent awards.
